The Lord’s Message:  The No-Named Woman Who Changed the World

            This morning we are going to continue our sermon series, Faithful Women of the Bible. We are going to look at a woman whose name we do not know.  Her name is not found anywhere in the Bible.  Even though we do not know this woman’s name, we will learn that she was a woman of great faith who changed the World.  You may think that if this woman was able to change the world, then the Bible would have recorded her name.  We find in the Bible that there are many people of great faith whose names we do not know.  For example, the two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24.  We know one of those disciples’ name is Cleopas, but we are never told the other disciple’s name.   When Elijah is mentally and spiritually exhausted, God calls him up to the cave at Mt. Horeb.  Elijah has a mental and spiritual breakdown.  This is found in 1 Kings 19.  Elijah tells the Lord in verse 14 that he is the only person who is faithful in all of Israel.  God corrects him in verse 18 that there are 7000 people who are still faithful.  We do not know that names of those 7000 people, but that does not mean what God told Elijah is not true.  I am blessed to meet faithful people to God every day.  It is an honor and a privilege for God to introduce these people to me. A lot of these people have been through very difficult times, but they have kept their faith in spite of what they have gone through and what they are enduring. 

            One of these people is a woman whose name we do not know, but she has changed the world.  Allow me to introduce you to this woman.  In Genesis 6:9-10, it says that Noah was a man of great faith who had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.  Now, unless my studies in Biology are off, Noah did not give birth to three sons.  Noah’s wife did.  Behind every great man is a “great woman.”  I know that for a fact.  I have searched throughout the scriptures and unfortunately, the Bible does not tell us the name of Noah’s wife.  Whatever this woman’s name was, she had a profound impact on the world. 

            Let us pray. 

Imagine the culture of the world during the time of Noah.  We do not have to wonder about the culture, the Bible tells us.  In Genesis 6:5, the Bible tells us that the world was so wicked that people’s hearts were bent on doing evil.  This caused the Lord to grieve at creating humans, because of the wickedness that the people were doing, verses 6-7. In verse 8, there was one man who found favor in God.  As we learn further, it was not this one man, but his family as well, who found favor in God.  Out of all the families of the earth, it was this one family that was being obedient to God.  It was because of the faithfulness of the father, Noah, and the mother, Noah’s wife.

            I was talking with a fellow Christian brother this week and he was telling me that this world seems to continue to devolve further and further into hate and wickedness.  My mother told me do not worry about what someone else is doing, you do what is right.  By right, she meant following God.  In Joshua 24:14-15, Joshua told the people to put away their idols and serve God.  Unless you decide that serving God is undesirable, instead serve the idols.  As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.    In all this wickedness, this wife of Noah must have raised her boys to know God and to follow Him. 

            God’s plan to cleanse the earth of the wickedness was to flood the earth, save a remnant of humans and land animals in a vessel called an ark.  The ark was no small endeavor.  The measurements of the ark are 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.  If anyone has gone to Kentucky and seen the replica of the ark, you know that this was no small project.  Noah was not commanded by God to build a rowboat.  Matter of fact, it took Noah about 100 years to build the ark. We know this by two verses of scripture, Genesis 5:32 & Genesis 7:6. 

Can you just imagine the ridicule that not only Noah faced, but his wife and his sons?  “Are you sure God told you to build a boat?”  “Are you sure, water called rain is going to fall from the sky, that has never happened before?”  “There is going to be a flood that is going wipe out all life on the land?” “Did you hear God correctly?”

But despite all this ridicule there is not one word that is mentioned that Noah’s wife ever ridiculed him.  Whereas the Bible records Job’s wife ridiculing him in Job 2:9-10.   Not only does the Bible not record any ridiculing from Noah’s wife, but she must also have willingly supported her husband with him draining their resources to build this ark.  Can you imagine the money that it took to build this ark?  How about the time and energy?  That meant that a lot of jobs that needed to be done around the house were done by her.  Jobs such as gathering and preparing food, making and washing clothes, managing the household and raising her boys.  The boys probably helped her when they could, but when they got old enough were helping their father build the ark. So those chores fell on Noah’s wife and later on the sons’ wives. 

When the ark was finished, there was more work that needed to be done.  She must have helped him gather the food for the animals, as well as helping to gather the animals.  I would suspect that she worked side by side with her husband. In spite of all of this, there is not one recording of Noah’s wife complaining about the project or the extra work that was expected of her. 

 She became a mentor for her sons’ wives.  She taught her sons’ wives about God and being faithful to Him.  She was an example to them of what it means to love their husbands.  In Genesis 7:7, the door of the ark is shut and only 8 people escape the flood.  When the door was shut to ark, she must have mourned the loss of her loved ones, her family, neighbors, and friends that refused to get in the ark.   But she needed to be at work caring for the animals. 

A little tidbit about water falling from the sky called rain.  We still experience flooding in a lot of places on the earth.  This is mainly caused by a lot of rain falling on the ground in a very fast period of time.  During this time, the people had never experienced rain, the ground was watered daily by springs, Genesis 2:6.  In Genesis 7:11-12, we have rain falling on the ground for the first time in the creation of the world.  So, you can understand the skepticism of the people when they heard that God was going to flood the earth.  It is a very rare weather pattern to have a rainbow without rain.  It can occur, but it is very rare for this occurrence.  That is why rain is important to remember when we get to the sign of God’s covenant, the rainbow.  There was no rainbow until there was rain.

In Genesis 8:18, when the floods recede, who was in the ark? Noah, Noah’s wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives.  They were the only humans that were saved by God, and this is the last mention in the Bible of Noah’s wife.  We do not know what happened to her.   

But in verse 20, we can assume that she was with her husband, her sons, and her sons’ wives as the first humans to worship God after the flood.  God response to their worship is found in verses 21-22.  God would make covenant not only with Noah, but with Noah’s wife, his sons, his sons’ wives, and all living things in Genesis 9:12-17. 

This no-named woman changed the world by being a powerful model of quiet faith and resilience.  She stood firm in spite of the ridicule that she and her husband faced.  There is no recording of her questioning or complaining to her husband of the task at which God had given him, even though she could not see the outcome.  This was a long project. So, she had to be patient in waiting for the completion of the project.  Last, she passed on her faithfulness to the next generation, her sons and their wives.  Her motherly influence and dedication ensured the survival of the human race.  She changed the world, even though the Bible never records her name.  Even though we do not know her name, she is an example to all of us to keep the faith.

So, let us continue to listen to God and do what He says.  Amen.
